The V-Bar-V Ranch Petroglyph Site.V-Bar-V Heritage Site is the largest known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley and one of the best-preserved. The tree-shaded petroglyphs alongside Beaver Creek were made by the Sinagua who entered this area about AD 650. Between AD 1150 and 1300, Sinagua villages of 3 to 10 families were scattered all over the Verde Valley. Later the Sinagua began to live in larger pueblos located closer to permanent water sources, each occupied by 20 to 100 or more families. These pueblos included Tuzigoot, Montezuma Castle and Sacred Mountain. The rock art site consists of 1,032 petroglyphs in 13 panels. Only one rock art style is present here, the Beaver Creek Style. The petroglyphs are sharp and clear with very little overlap. Animals, birds and snakes are prominently featured and many figures occur in pairs. Links to other information |
